The International Anti–Corruption Day is a global observance that takes place on December 9th each year. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the detrimental effects of corruption on societies and economies worldwide. It also serves as a call to action to combat corruption, promote transparency and uphold ethical values in both public and private sectors.
The theme for the 2024 International Anti–Corruption day is “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”.
The youth are the leaders of tomorrow, they are the decision–makers of the near future who shall shape the nation’s destiny. As we consider the passion, creativity, and determination of the young people worldwide, we will discover that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow but the catalyst for change today. This shows the pivotal role of youths in combating corruption and why their involvement is not just beneficial but essential for creating a more transparent and just world. It is also pertinent to note that by engaging young people in anti–corruption efforts today, we are not only addressing current issues but also investing in a future where integrity and transparency are the norm rather than the exception. As these young leaders grow into positions of power and influence they will carry with them the values and skills necessary to maintain and strengthen anti–corruption measures.
Sensitization of young people is an important platform for curbing corruption. In view of the fact that these young people do not know any better than to trust those in positions of authority, they are frequently the most vulnerable to being targeted by corrupt people once they enter the workforce and begin making their own decisions. We can help young people make better judgments later in life by educating them early about the hazards of corruption and how to resist being coerced into engaging in corrupt behaviours.
While young people are significantly affected by corruption, they also have the potential to become powerful agents of change in the fight for a future rooted in integrity. To combat corruption effectively, they must be well informed about its prevalence and effects. They should understand different forms of corruption and its impact on a nation’s growth and development.
OYACA joins the entire world to mark this day, to renew its commitment of working together with the good people of Oyo State and the whole world to end corruption and its devastating impact on people’s lives. Eradicating corruption will help the development of our State in particular and our Country in general.
